Upcoming Event: Time on the Clock of the World
Part of Collective Resistance's "We Are Each Other's Business” Winter series
“We are beginning to understand that the world is always being made fresh and never finished; that activism can be the journey rather than the arrival; that's struggle doesn't always have to be confrontational but can take the form of reaching out to find common ground with the many others in our society who are also seeking ways out from alienation, isolation, privatization, and dehumanization by corporate globalization.”
Grace Lee Boggs, “The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century”
I learned about Grace Lee Boggs from my friend and comrade Lee Jimenez during the 2018 Allied Media Conference. It was my first time in Detroit, a place full of energy and hope. Part of the reason it was so magical was because of the long legacy of artists, workers, organizers, thinkers, and creators who called Detroit home. Grace was one of those people, spending over half of her 100 years living and working in this city, one she loved so deeply.
Grace devoted her 100 years of life to an evolving revolution that encompassed the contradictions of America’s past and its potential future. In 1974, she co-authored Revolution and Evolution in the 20th Century with her husband Jimmy Boggs, where they asked, “What time is it on the clock of the world?” This question was an invitation for us to imagine our collective human history as a clock; as time changes, our conditions change, and those changing conditions inform our strategy. Change is a teacher. Change changes us, too.
On Tuesday, December 12th and December 19th at 6 PM EST/5 PM CST/4 PM MT/3 PM PST, I will be facilitating a reading and discussion session that reflects on Grace Lee Boggs’ question, “What time is it on the clock of the world?” We will talk about our current political and social contexts in relationship to the genocide and ethnic cleansing campaign by the Zionist settler state against Palestinians, engage in dialectics, organizing strategies, movement frameworks, and what our roles are at this time on the clock. A lot of this is laid out in November’s post, too.
It’s looking very ambitious, but I am very excited to hear from everyone, and I am grateful to P and the team at Collective Resistance for holding the container.
